Dragon Cave has had an API for 15 years now. If you don't know what an API is, that's fine (this post is likely not for you)—it's the thing that allows 3rd party sites such as hatcheries to work.

The API has not been significantly updated in some time. This is of course on purpose: APIs are meant to be stable, and changes risk breaking sites that rely on it. In fact, some behaviors have been deprecated for years, but haven't been removed because they're still in use.

Lots of things have changed in that time, which is why today I'm announcing APIv2. This mostly represents a change in how the API is used more than a change in what it is capable of, but it also opens up a lot of possibilities for future expansion. I'll outline the major changes below, but you can also see the updated documentation for a persistent reference:

Self-service

The API is now largely self-service. You can create and manage your own applications, update information, and see stats without needing to wait for specific approval.

Existing applications have been mapped to the corresponding Dragon Cave accounts based on the provided email addresses, and should already be available. If your app is missing, please reach out.

Calling convention updates

The "legacy" API uses a pretty weird way of passing parameters—everything is passed as part of the path. This leads to situations where parameters can have multiple meanings, and adding new (or optional) parameters is nigh impossible. APIv2 only uses paths for primary identifiers (e.g. dragon IDs), and authorization happens via now-standard HTTP headers. URL parameters are largely used for additional filtering, providing new capabilities when loading someone's dragons.

OAuth2 Login

API login is how 3rd party sites are able to confirm the identity of a given user. It allows them to make sure that you are the person adding your own eggs to a hatchery, for example. The existing version of API login was designed to allow this to happen securely, ensuring that people only enter their Dragon Cave username and password on Dragon Cave itself.

Since then, OAuth 2.0 has become the standard way of accomplishing this. While conceptually similar, OAuth is widely supported across the internet, meaning it's easier to securely integrate using existing libraries. For example, the ability to "Login with Dragon Cave" on the forums uses OAuth and APIv2.

In addition to being more standardized, Adopting OAuth allows the updated API to make use of "scopes," which allow applications to request additional information during the login process. Using this, sites can ask permission to access a user's list of dragons, even if that user has chosen to hide it from public view. Hatcheries that make use of this can allow people to add their eggs while keeping the "Hide scroll" option turned on.

Dragon Groups

APIv2 includes several new endpoints that allow sites to fetch a given user's groups. Sites that make use of these endpoints can allow users to more easily navigate their dragons for e.g. lineage previews or other functionality that they may wish to provide.

Launch Status

While APIv2 is being announced today, the version of the API that is in use today is not going anywhere. Existing sites are encouraged to upgrade to APIv2 (especially to take advantage of new functionality), but are not yet required to do so. The Legacy API will be maintained for the foreseeable future, though it will eventually be discontinued. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
